45 years of successful adaptation to challenge and change
Mississauga, Ontario – When Don Grant audited financial statements for Simgo Limited almost 50 years ago, business wasn’t booming for the fledgling company. Yet, as a mergers and acquisitions specialist with one of Canada’s leading accountancies, Don could see the small firm’s potential to grow along with Canada’s beverage industry. He surprised his accounting colleagues in 1976 when he bought Simgo and made the leap from downtown corporate executive to risk-taking suburban entrepreneur.
Today, Simgo customers range from Canada’s major bottlers and other national accounts, to regional and artisanal enterprises. Don Grant is still involved, a step back from day-to-day activity for health reasons. Now President and Director, Don’s wife Jill Grant notes, “We have a devoted team fulfilling obligations – technical support, order processing, shipping and service. Our customers can expect continuing stability and reliability.”
Don Grant’s vision for the family-run company also remains in place. It’s a successful mix of loyal relationships, quality service, adaptability, generosity and fun. Many customers have looked to Simgo for support for 20 or 30 years or more. Inside Simgo’s doors, you discover comparable long-term loyalty. Sales and service team members average over 20 years with the firm. The result is a hard-to-match depth of experience, client knowledge and technical expertise that can help customers avoid or cut downtime in a pinch.
The company got its start in 1969 supplying tanks and fittings to soft drink bottlers across Can-ada. With industry consolidation and changing markets, in 1991 Simgo added fountain equip-ment and dispensing equipment for soft drinks and beer to its repertoire. In a dramatic shift, “Bag in a Box” syrup ended the need for product tanks. Simgo was at the forefront of this change, supplying the industry with state-of-the-art solutions. Beverage service locations of all types – quick-serve restaurants, bars and dining rooms, airports, sports arenas and event ven-ues – now rely on Simgo for readily-available inventory of equipment and parts, along with problem-solving consultation when needed.
The company continues to innovate and adapt to successive waves of change in the industry and business conditions. Answering the pandemic challenge, new filtration and sanitizing technologies will reduce the extra labour necessitated by stepped-up cleaning protocols. These systems will deliver continuing value once the pandemic is history.
Even with significant tech innovations, Don Grant will remind you, “It’s really all about the people. I’ve achieved far more with good relationships and a handshake than with contracts.”
